Tortilla toasties

A recipe to acquire, develop and secure practical food skills such as knife skills or hob skills such as frying while demonstrating the principles of good food hygiene and safety.

Ingredients

2 wholemeal tortillas

1x10ml spoon tomato sauce or passata

25g reduced-fat Cheddar cheese

1 slice ham

1 spring onion

Equipment

Chopping board, knife, non-stick frying pan, measuring spoon, fish slice.

Method

1. Prepare the filling:

  • top and tail the spring onion and slice into rings;
  • chop the ham into small pieces.

2. Place one of the tortillas in the pan.

3. Spread the tomato sauce over the tortilla.

4. Arrange the ham, spring onion and cheese over the tortilla.

5. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the cheese starts to melt.

6. Place the 2nd tortilla on top.

7. Flip the tortilla over and cook for 4-5 minutes.

Top tips:

  • Turn up the flavour: Try different flavour combinations such as 1x 5ml spoon pesto or add fresh chilli for a kick.
  • Vary your protein: Try adding tuna, cooked chicken or prawns to boost the protein content of the dish. 
  • Reduce food waste: Use up any leftover vegetables such as mushrooms, tomatoes, red onion, green pepper, courgette or sweetcorn. 
  • Beat the budget: Freeze a pack of tortillas and use only what you need.
